Calmers Rage

For some horse owners, owning a ‘excitable or nervous’ horse or pony can have a huge impact on what they can and cannot do with their horses.

Some horses have different triggers, for some it will be arriving at a show ground or the competition atmosphere that pushes them over the edge, whilst for others it can be simply seeing horses in the distance out hacking. Whatever the cause, nervousness, wariness, excitability, apprehension and irritability can be detrimental to the horses’ performance under saddle and lead to other health issues including muscle tremors and tying up.

Horses and ponies that display any of these characteristics on a long term basis are likely to have a magnesium deficiency. Horses have a limited ability to store magnesium and any behavioural problems arising from such a deficiency are likely to manifest themselves quite quickly. Magnesium is low in feed and grazing and the more stressed a horse or pony becomes, the more they sweat, and any reserve of magnesium is lost through the sweating process, which is why it is not only important to feed magnesium but important to feed the right type.

Pro-Mag Calm Liquid and Powder.

These compounds contain 2 forms of magnesium. The first compound is a very small amino acid that when dissolved, is readily absorbed through the intestine wall and quickly builds up magnesium in the body for a rapid calming effect. The second compound, Magnesium Aspartate is regarded as the Aston Martin of Magnesium salts. It is quickly absorbed and will keep magnesium levels topped up so horses and ponies will stay and remain calm on a long term basis.

These 2 compounds have been chosen over other traditional forms of magnesium such as sulphate, Calcium magnesite and Magnesium oxide because they deliver 12mg of magnesium per feed which is the most a horse can store at a quicker absorption rate.

Both products contain up to 50 days supply

Electrolytes Range

Most of you will have ridden your horse and had to wash him off afterwards, because he has got sweaty –however did you know that a horses body weight is approximately 65% water, so an average sized horse of 500kg will hold about (325kg) of water. Horses working for an hour at a trot or for short periods at high speed can lose over 10 litres of sweat in just one workout and in hot weather this figure could increase dramatically.

Exercise in any form generates a great deal of heat which must be either dissipated or stored. The most desirable way for a horse to maintain body temperature is to sweat, and high sweating rates result in high electrolyte and water loss. If large amounts of heat are stored in the body, the body temperature will rise to dangerous levels, resulting in dehydration.

Horse sweat doesn’t just contain water it contains important electrolytes of calcium, magnesium and most notably sodium, chloride and potassium. These are the horse’s most important electrolytes and large losses of these electrolytes can result in problems such as tying up and muscle cramps. Horses that suffer these losses may have reduced sweating rates which reduces the ability to manage body temperature.

The consequences of inadequate electrolyte replacement can lead to dehydration, overwhelming, poor recovery and fatigue after work, impair muscle and nerve function, overheating and failure to perform to expectations, no matter what level of competition or discipline. Electrolyte replacement is imperative for health and well being and not just performance.

Pro-Electrolyte Replacer

An essential for every horse owner – this fast working electrolyte replaces depleted electrolytes and helps speed up recovery time and fatigue after exercise, hot weather or competition. Contains BCAA (Branch Chain Amino Acids) to assist muscle energy and reduce lactic acid build up which is the primary cause of tying up and muscle cramp.

1 litre – up to 20 days supply

Pro- Electrolyte Plus – 30g syringe

Pro-Electrolyte syringe has been devised for horses before travelling when excessive sweating can lead to loss of vital electrolytes which can severely impede performance. In addition, muscles that are static, not contracting and not relaxing normally, will stiffen – requiring recuperation upon arrival.

For optimum effect administer syringe 30 minutes before travelling and within 30 minutes post competition to help speed up the recovery process.

Joint & Muscle Range

Horses tend to start encountering joint problems either because of bad confirmation or because we often ask them to do things they weren’t designed to do. Think of the concussive force on the joints of the front legs of a 500kg horse sailing over a jump and landing on his front feet, or my dressage horses who undertake often complicated and difficult movements. Simple lateral movements, such as shoulder-in and half-pass, can cause high joint stress, particularly on the hock.

Event horses and show-jumpers, also suffer great stress on the hind limb joints on take-off and then on the entire forelimb on landing. In addition, the show jumper will be asked to jump then on landing may have a sharp turn, again placing severe stress on the hocks. Many everyday riders who compete in riding club dressage, local hunter trials or the odd clear round are putting their horse’s joints and muscles under stress as does everyday riding.

My joint range is the first of its type to cater for joint & muscle support as the muscles provide the elasticity and flexibility, whilst the joints take the impact and with wear and tear and age, both can begin to suffer affecting performance and well being. The range comprises of 3 products all containing key ingredients Glucosamine HCL, Chondroitin, MSM, fast working anti-oxidants and HA with added muscle building and support ingredients in an ATS form that produces results quickly.

Joint and Muscle Maintenance

A supplement for every day use in either a liquid or a powder to be fed to any horse or pony whatever its age to help prevent the onset of joint problems and provide support to surrounding muscles for improved flexibility and elasticity.

Respiratory Range

These days, the modern equine, has to face many challenges that affects its lungs and its associated performance. During the winter months, longer stabling hours can mean that fungal spores and airborne irritants are prevalent in abundance in hay, bedding and also on riding surfaces, whilst the spring and summer can bring high pollen counts, as well as the introduction of chemicals from industrial spraying, which can also be anatagonistic.

Horses that react to these symptoms upon inhalation can irritate the delicate lung tissue and this is what creates a cough reflex. For any ridden horse you need to ensure that it does not suffer from any blocked passages and where possible increase lung capacity to allow more oxygen to be delivered into the blood. This increased supply of oxygen allows the muscles to work harder and last longer for optimum performance.

Nasal Vapour

This innovative and easy to apply salve is a great remedy for the temporary relief of minor respiratory irritation or congestion. Applied directly to the nostrils it gives immediate relief helping open up airways. May be used prior to events to clear congestion.

450g pot

Air Power

A fast acting “cough syrup” for horses. Perfect for any respiratory problems and helps to loosen deep seated ‘muck’ and congestion found in the lungs. Easily fed with the horses main feed or orally via syringe.

Key ingredients include Echinacea, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Menthol, Liquorice, Ginger and Aniseed.
