The main purpose of a wax jacket is to keep you warm and dry.

Wax jackets have been part of Barbour heritage since 1894 as sailors, fishermen, river, dock and shipyard workers needed clothing that would keep them dry.

After the war, the uses of waxed cotton multiplied. It was quickly taken up by country sports enthusiasts, gamekeepers, farmers and motorcyclists.

Since 1930 Barbour has made changes and improvements in production. Barbour jackets are now a lot lighter, much more supple and the distinctive smelling cupro-ammonia has been removed.

Barbour is now famous for the creation of unique wax cotton. Although each style of wax jacket can be quite different in look, touch and performance.

To clean the inside of a Barbour wax jacket you need to use clean cold water, a clean sponge and a bit of old-fashioned elbow grease.

Once cleaned you could use an odour neutralising spray on the inside lining of your wax jacket.

Never use hot water, any kind of soap and do not put the wax jacket in the washing machine as this will remove the wax coating. Once the wax coating has been removed you will not be able to have the jacket re-waxed.

Barbour recommends re-waxing your Barbour waxed jacket at least once a year if the coat has regular use. If not used as regular you can get your wax jacket re-waxed less frequently.

If you choose to use Barbour’s re-waxing service they will reapply a wax coating all over the jacket to ensure it remains weather-resistant and resilient.
