The Fager Martin is a double-jointed Sweet Iron bit featuring a Front Lock system. This means that the bit has a sweet taste to make the horse seek more contact with the bit, and when you have a good contact in the reins, the bit locks like a straight bit. This will help your horse to keep the consistent contact if it struggles to trust the bit.

Martin offers outstanding stability and comfort. When the horse is working, the Front lock is there to assist, whatever the positioning of the head. From a low position (stretching out) or higher (over a jump), the closure continues to work even if the reins pull the bit upwards; making the bit turn downwards – this is where a regular lockup system would fail. It also makes it considerably more forgiving against any unexpected movements of your hands.

Sweet iron is a covering on top of a bit made of stainless steel. The purpose is to disguise the metal taste from stainless steel and create a pleasant, sweet taste. This encourages the horse to seek more contact and hold on to the bit. Following use, sweet iron will start to oxidize and turn brownish grey, this is to be expected.

The Kimblehook acts as a fixed ring bit that lets you add leverage when needed. Placing the rein lower increases the pressure, distributing it across the chin, poll, and mouth. The Kimblehook puts the pressure further down in the mouth which can help a horse that gets too high in the neck. Kimblehooks are always used together with a chain or strap behind the chin.

Please note, horses who are wide over the premolars/teeth may need to size up in this bit due to the upper shanks. This is because the sidepiece of the bridle is attached to the upper shank of the bit, which is placed higher up where some horses are wider than others.
